Spring Activities for Seniors

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it’s time to enjoy all that spring has to offer. This season is a symbol of new life and offers people the chance to enjoy the outdoors after being stuck inside all winter. Here are a few ways to enjoy this season for those who are retired.

Go for a Walk

One of the best ways to enjoy spring is simply to go for a walk. You can find a city park or state park with easy trails or you can choose a more challenging route for a hike. You’ll discover something for every level of fitness. There are even paths approved for wheelchairs.

Go Fishing

If you enjoy the outdoors and want to spend a few hours out in the sunshine and fresh air, take along your fishing pole and find a pond or lake. This is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon while you watch nature or people.

Visit a Farmer’s Market

There’s nothing quite so flavorful as fresh foods. Find a local farmer’s market and try out some of the locally grown fruits and vegetables. Many of these markets have local arts and crafts to interest visitors as well as other entertainment. It’s a great way to meet new people and see old friends while finding something tasty for dinner.

Find an Outdoor Restaurant

Call up a friend and agree to meet for lunch, dinner or even just coffee at an eatery with an outdoor patio. After being shut inside for months, you will appreciate the soft breeze in the air and the warm sun on your skin as you enjoy a meal. The food even tastes better when you eat outdoors. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

Plan a Picnic

For an even more enjoyable outdoor meal, plan a picnic with a friend or the grandkids. You can even go somewhere by yourself and take a book along or just listen to music while you eat and relax. Whether you go to the local park or just have a picnic in your back yard, this is a fun ritual for spring.

Do Some Spring Cleaning

Many people accumulate stuff which just continues to add up as they get older. Spring is the perfect time to clean out a closet or cabinet and get rid of stuff you don’t use. Find a friend who is having a garage sale, host one of your own or just donate it.

Plant Something

If your green thumb is itching to get in the dirt, plant a garden. Even if you have limited space or aren’t physically able to handle the demands of a full garden, you can place a few flowers in a pot or even grow an herb garden in a box planter. This is one activity that you can adjust to your abilities and have the fun of watching something grow.

These are just a few ideas to get you started thinking about how you can enjoy spring. Canterbury-on-the-Lake has a calendar full of activities to enjoy the season. Choose activities that allow you to be outside and enjoy nature in this beautiful season.
